Questions about how wpLingua works
Where are my translations stored?
Your server’s database holds all the translations locally.
Can wpLingua slow down my site?
wpLingua does not slow down your site. Once the translations are automatically generated, displaying the translated pages will take as much time as displaying the original pages. In any case, with or without wpLingua, it is strongly recommended to use a caching plugin to speed up a WordPress site. We recommend WP Rocket, but wpLingua is also compatible with other caching plugins.
Do I have to translate each page manually?
No way ! It is wpLingua that takes care of all the translations automatically.
Can my visitors see the translation generation progress bar?
When you explore your site in a translated language for the first time, a progress bar appears to indicate that automatic translations are being generated. This bar is only visible to administrators, and remains invisible to your visitors. This feature has been designed to enhance the user experience of site administrators.
Can we translate all types of sites?
First, please note that only WordPress websites can use wpLingua.
Then, we reserve the right to refuse sites that do not respect the rules established in our Terms and Conditions.
Does wpLingua also translate emails sent from the website?
Not yet, but it’s on our roadmap! This feature will only be available in our paid plans.
Can translation management be restricted to specific user roles?
wpLingua does not offer the option of restricting translation management to certain user roles.
Questions about SEO
Can wpLingua slow down my site?
wpLingua does not slow down your site. Once the translations are automatically generated, displaying the translated pages will take as much time as displaying the original pages. In any case, with or without wpLingua, it is strongly recommended to use a caching plugin to speed up a WordPress site. We recommend WP Rocket, but wpLingua is also compatible with other caching plugins.
How can I be sure that Google will index my translated pages?
Google has always decided on the indexing of a site’s pages. However, wpLingua uses one of Google’s most recommended methods:
“Use separate URLs for each language version. Instead of using cookies or browser settings to adjust the language in which the page is displayed, we recommend defining separate URLs for each language version. If you define different URLs for each language, use hreflang annotations to ensure that Google search results point to the correct language version of a page.”
wpLingua has designed its code to differentiate translated pages with the hreflang tag as recommended by Google. See this page for an explanation
Does wpLingua create a sitemap.xml for translated pages?
A sitemap.xml is used to notify Google of all the URLs of a website. Google allows two methods of reporting language variants in order to index your pages: hreflang annotations or sitemaps. wpLingua automatically adds hreflang tags to the source code of your pages, making the use of a sitemap.xml unnecessary and redundant. So your website doesn’t need a sitemap to enable indexing of your multilingual versions.
Can I use a crawler to generate translations quickly?
It might seem like a good idea to launch a crawler to generate the first translations of your site more quickly. However, using a crawler can be disastrous: not only will your server be under heavy load at any given moment, which could generate 500 errors, but our API may not be able to keep up. We therefore advise you to visit your site manually at “human speed”, so that your site can be translated smoothly.
Questions about errors
wpLingua doesn't seem to be working properly, what can I do?
wpLingua is supposed to work correctly. We develop and update it regularly, testing it carefully before each update. If wpLingua is not working correctly on your website, the source of the cause may be diverse:
- First check that your site is using the latest version of WordPress and a recent version of PHP.
- Also check that all your plugins and themes are up to date.
- Clear your caches and try another web browser (an outdated browser could also cause problems).
- If the problems are still present, deactivate the extensions one by one, this will allow you to find which extension is in conflict.
Finally, don’t hesitate to contact support for help.
Some texts have not been translated, so what should we do?
If you used a crawler to generate the first translations more quickly, this is certainly the cause of the problem: the translation API cannot handle thousands of strings at a time, and can therefore return strings that are not translated. If you did not use a crawler, but some texts were not translated, the quality of the HTML code of your content (if the source code has errors) may be the cause. Finally, in certain specific cases, wpLingua must improve compatibility with your site.
In any case, please contact support so that we can find a solution.
